F1 champion Lewis Hamilton praises the benefits of a plant-based diet in his latest cover interview with Vanity Fair
F1 champ Lewis Hamilton has revealed his ‘go-to’ vegan snack that he now eats every day.
During a recent cover interview with Vanity Fair, the pro racer ordered hummus and falafel from a Moroccan restaurant in New York.
“I used to look at hummus and I was like, ‘No way would I ever eat hummus!’” he told journalist Chris Heath.
“And I love it now. It’s my go-to thing every day”.
Why did Lewis Hamilton go vegan?
He says the transition was sparked by a vegan friend he met in New York who “opened his eyes to the realities of food production”.
The Mercedes star also spoke about how doctors warned he would struggle to get enough protein on a vegan diet – but ended up “smoothing out” his energy levels when eating vegan.
“I mean, I’ve won five world titles since then,” he said. “I’ve been more consistent than I ever was in the past. So it just takes proving people wrong. And that’s what I did.”
‘I’m more successful than ever’
This is not the first time Hamilton has hailed the health benefits of going plant-based. In a 2021 interview with Men’s Health, he said: I have more energy; I’m so much more productive. I wake up feeling way better, clearer in thought and fresher in my body.”
“I recover quicker; I sleep better. My skin cleared up. I have fewer allergies. There are just so many impacts.
“I’m physically in better shape than I’ve ever been, and I’m more successful than ever right now, and my plant-based programme has played such a big role in that.”
What Lewis Hamilton eats for sporting success
So what does a five-time world champion eat every day on a plant-based detail? Speaking with Men’s Health, Hamilton said he starts his day with avocado toast.
“I’ll get up and I’ll have avocado on toast in the morning, for example, or if I’m cutting carbs, I’d have avocado and fruit in the morning and a smoothie,” he said.
“I always have smoothies. I love having various smoothies with plant-based protein. I generally have that probably two or three times a day because it’s super quick, super easy, put it in the blender and you can take it with you.”
Lunch typically consists of salad with plenty of avocado providing healthy fats and lots of vegetables.
“For dinner,” Hamilton says, “I love plant-based curries which are a little bit more fattening, but they taste great.”
To make sure his energy stays on top form during the day, Hamilton keeps his body fuelled with lot of nuts and vegan protein bars.
